| Community Projects South Florida Harvest GRC is currently undertaking two community pilot projects with the cooperation of Florida International University's student chapter. The goal is to integrate these community projects into a full-time operational structure. Millions of pounds of good, edible food are thrown away each year by South Florida food businesses. At the same time, people are going hungry. South Florida Harvest is the link between those who have too much and those who have so little, rather than letting all of that food fall into the usual waste stream. South Florida Harvest rescues excess food from all segments of the food industry - including restaurants, manufacturers, wholesalers, greenmarkets, hotels, corporate cafeterias, grocery stores and farms. It is then delivered to agencies such as Camilla's House, nursing homes, and shelters. In addition to canned and dried food, South Florida Harvest collects perishable and prepared foods maintained at safe temperature zones and chilled or frozen before being donated. Food donation guidelines for fresh, refrigerated, frozen and prepared foods are used to certify food quality. GRC utilizes permits and certification regarding food handling in order to provide the most appropriate service to our business clients and to the community.
REACT! GRC provides proper education and awareness of the need for recycling and the proper use of resources to the community and its affiliates, and encourages everyone to participate helping GRC to serve its mission. GRC distributes a newsletter with basic information about the different programs we are involved in, as well as news updates about the recycling industry and environmental issues in the community and worldwide. GRC visits schools to educate children, teenagers, and young adults, about environmental awareness such as global warming, and how it affects our lives. GRC strives to participate in as many environmental trade shows and community events as possible promoting awareness about recycling and environmental protection. In Miami-Dade County, GRC participates in a series of events organized through a program called “Miami Earth Dade” launched in March 2006 serving the same mission as well as using this method to promote environmental solutions to solid waste.
